‘We Could Have Ended The Witcher’, Showrunner on Henry Cavill’s Exit

The biggest topic of discussion regarding the third season of Netflix’s The Witcher is undoubted that it will be lead star Henry Cavill’s last as Geralt of Rivia. There have been very few comments from people involved in the show and all are rather vague and dry. With the promotion ramping up for Season 3, now we are finally getting more.

Lauren Hissrich elaborates on Henry Cavill’s departure

Speaking to Total Film magazine, showrunner Lauren Hissrich offered some elaboration regarding Henry Cavill’s exit and reveals they had other alternatives to recasting:

It was time for him in his life to move on. I think we’ve all been mourning this in our own way. We had the choice to have Geralt exit and end the show. [But] that’s not something that we were willing to do. There are just too many stories left to tell.

If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we would be going fully away from the books, and I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted either.

She further expressed optimism about The Witcher Season 4 and Liam Hemsworth, who is set to replace Cavill.

We’re all excited about Liam coming in. He’s got enormous shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it. It’s obviously a brand-new chapter for us. And there’s a lot of things involved. But at the end of the day we love what we’re doing and we’re gonna keep going.

Earlier speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Anya Chalotra commented on the topic as well. She found out after they had already wrapped Season 3:

All we knew were the feelings that we have when any season comes to an end. It’s full of pride and love and accomplishment for what we’ve done. So, we stayed in that moment rather than anything else.

The news was… yeah, it’s hard to take because he’s a crucial part of the show and we all adore him. So, we’re gonna miss him a lot. I wish him all the best.

Season 3 of The Witcher is in post-production for a June and July release. The Rats spin-off is currently in pre-production. Stay tuned to Redanian Intelligence and do pop into our Discord server to join in on The Witcher conversation.
